How To Protect Yourself From Armed Robbery

While a purse snatching is one of today's most common crimes facing women, strong arm robbery (hold-ups, muggings) is the most prevalent act where men are generally the victims.

By observing the basic rules of "common sense" your chances of being victimized are greatly reduced. Since most strong arm robberies occur during the hours between sunset and sunrise, the best rule to follow is simply to stay inside at night. However, to even consider being confined to a secure area after the sun goes down is not only impossible, it is also ridiculous. By observing basic precautionary measures, chances of your becoming a robbery victim are greatly reduced. Here are some general rules to follow:

1. Travel well-lighted streets. Avoid dark corners, alleys and entrances to buildings. Always try to walk on the side of the street nearest oncoming traffic.

2. If you must travel at night regularly, don't carry more than you can afford to lose. One suggestion is to carry a second wallet containing a few $1.00 bills and old credit cards, which are normally destroyed or discarded. If confronted at knife or gunpoint, give the suspect the second wallet and concentrate on a good physical description to give to the police.

3. There's safety in numbers! If possible, walk with a companion - either male or female. An armed robber is less likely to confront two or more, than a lone individual.

4. When waiting for a bus or streetcar, try to select a well lighted area. Aim for a busy stop where many people will be coming and going.

5. Don't hitchhike or accept rides from strangers.

6. Avoid taking shortcuts through deserted areas such as parks, playgrounds, vacant lots, etc.

7. Be cautious entering your car - someone may be hiding inside. Or, when leaving your car - someone may be waiting. Park in well-lighted areas.

8. Never carry weapons that can be used against you.

9. If someone ask directions, keep a polite but safe distance.

10. If you are alone and think you are being followed, head for an occupied building such as a bar, restaurant, filling station, fire station, etc. If none is available, cross the street in the middle of the block. If there is street vehicular traffic, try to stop a car for help.

IF YOU ARE CONFRONTED

1. DO NOT RESIST! Cooperate! Give the criminal whatever he asks for - wallet, keys, jewelry, credit cards or whatever. Your life is more valuable than replaceable possessions.

2. Don't make any sudden, unexpected moves. A nervous criminal may think you are reaching for a concealed weapon.

3. If the suspect claims he has a gun, knife, razor or whatever in his pocket, never try to force his bluff.

4. Never try to be a hero and apprehend the criminal yourself.

5. Notify police as soon as possible.

Child Safety Online

How do you know if your child is in danger of encountering a perpetrator? Here are some tell-tale signs you should spot:

• If your child starts to detach from the rest of the family. They don’t eat at the dinner table or accompany the family on outings. They become detached from school and other activities they used to enjoy.

• The child doesn’t talk to their family as much as they used to. When a sex offender or perpetrator tries to lure them away, they’ll plant false images in the child’s mind. The child in turn, creates a separation between themselves and their families.

• Your child is suddenly getting gifts from someone you’ve never met or heard of. This is another way the offender tries to separate the child from their family. The offender will send things that the child likes in order to get their attention.

• The offender will make it seem like they are the only ones the like the child and are looking out for their best interests. Some offenders will go as far as sending them a plane ticket to meet them.

• If you happen to come in the room and your child abruptly changes to another website or screen, there’s a chance they may be looking at something that they’re not supposed to look at. If they’re looking at sexually charged content, they do not want you to see it. They don’t want to suffer the consequences.

• In order to divert attention from their online account, you child will use someone else’s account to access sexually charged content or connect with the sex offender. They’ll either go to the library or a friend’s place to do this.

• Phone calls for your child will increase and they won’t be from their friends, either. It will be from people that parents have never heard of or met. Or, they can be long distance phone numbers that parents don’t know about.

Some perpetrators talk with the children to get them sexually aroused. This way, they can get them in the mood to set up a date for a real sexual encounter.

• If parents find that their child spends a lot of time on the internet, this may be a problem. It could definitely surface as a problem if the child is online during the late evening hours when they should be sleeping.

• They’ll also stay online during the weekends. They’ll spend a lot of time in the chat rooms. If they are home alone after school, this is a perfect set up for the perpetrator.

They will either have the child call them back or they’ll get the child’s phone number from the child themselves. Some perpetrators have even gone so far as to get a toll-free number so the parents would think that it might be a company calling. This way, they would be able to throw the parent off as to who is actually calling.

This is not good because there is no guidance or control during this time. While the parents are working, the child has their way and is in free reign of the computer.

If they’re not focused on what they’re supposed to be doing, they can easily get sidetracked with people trying to lure them for sexual encounters or they could get hooked on pornography at a young age.

In order to get their young victims to open up, sex offenders may send the child pornographic images. They try to instill in the child that those sexual relations between children and adults is natural. Parents should be cognizant of what is on the computer. A child may also copy the sexually explicit pictures on a disk to put away.

If parents have a suspicion that their child is headed for danger, there are some things they can do before it gets worse:

• Parents will eventually want to confront the child about their concerns. Let the child know that they care and that if the concerns are true, find way to turn the situation around.

• Parents should check what websites their child has had access to. If the parent finds any kind of sexually explicit information, this should be cause for alarm.

Parents should continue to monitor internet access on an ongoing basis. This would include any type of communications such as instant messaging and chat rooms.

How To Choose The Right Self Defense Product

We all think we will be able to stay composed, and be in control in the event of an attack. But the truth is, you never know just how we would react when our life of personal safety in at risk. But, surrender is not an option. When all else fails, yell, scream, bite, scratch, kick, and do whatever you can to survive. What factors come in to play when making a decision to purchase a self defense product?

1. Convenience
Confrontations are usually unplanned. Meaning, you never know when a situation may arise. Whether it be walking to your car in a parking garage, could be at a sporting event, domestic violence, or while shopping. But in the event some type of disturbance does occur, you want to be able to have easy access you’re your choice of self defense product. Examples of convenience/easy access items include: pepper sprays, keychain alarms, and kubotans.

2. Ease of use
In the midst of a confrontation, the last thing you need is to have a personal protection product that you can’t use. The ideal product is something that is simple to operate and is a natural reaction. Something as simple as point and shoot, pulling a trigger, pressing a button, or even swing and hit are reactionary impulses. When situations arise, many time we do not have time to think. We have to react. Example of ease of use/reactionary products: Stun guns, pepper sprays, stun baton, and telescopic steel batons.

3. Effectiveness
Stopping power. Attention getters. There’s no time for taking a chance when someone is threatening you or a loved one. We want to make sure that our choice of personal protection products will get the job done. Effectiveness is still a matter of personal preference also. Some people may feel that they need a 4 million volt stun gun that will flat out knock someone on the behind, while others may feel comfortable with a keychain alarm that emits an extremely loud noise when activated. Many of these products have been time tested and proven to be effective in almost any situation.

4. Cost
Although you can’t put a dollar value on life, the most expensive is not always better. However, as the saying goes… you get what you pay for. Self defense products range from the $4 kubotan to the $60 stungun. Again, cost matters, but I would not let cost be the overwhelming determining factor as to which product works best for you.

Pepper Spray Takes A Low Blow

Just read an interesting article on stltoday.com.  Basically, a fugitive got "tortured" with pepper spray.  According to the article, while the fugitive was in handcuffs and detained, a couple of bail bondsman rubbed pepper spray under eyelids and on his genitals.  Ouch...  Of course this is all accusations at this point, however, I would not recommend this technique.  Even though it may be slightly more effective than the traditional use of pepper spray, I'd rather use it from a safer distance.

Personal Protection and Self Defense Products

Over the next few posts we will be dealing with personal protection and self defense products.  Let's face it, times are changing, people are changing, and our lifestyles are changing.  How many of us leave our car doors unlocked?  How many of us still leave a spare key under the door mat?  When was the last time you gave a ride to a stranger?  You have to admit, these days we are more careful than in days past.

Which brings me to the point... how do we get back that feeling of safety, confidence, and security?  For those of us who don't pack "heat", we pack other non-lethal personal protection products.  Most of us have heard of stun guns, pepper sprays, personal alarms, and popular self defense products.  The reason why most of us are familiar with these items, is because they have proven to be very effective and have stood the test of time.

The Stun Gun

The evolution of stun guns over the past few years has been remarkable.  These very powerful and effective electronic devices are not just attention getters.  They are engineered and designed to stop an attacker in their tracks.  They come in a variety of shapes sizes and colors.  Ranging from 80,000 volts, to over 4,000,000 volts; 3.5 inches to to over 7 inches tall.  I am not just talking about your typical stun gun... the variety of these devices will "shock" you.  There's the typical stun gun.  Then we have the stun baton.  Then there's the telescopic/expandable stun baton.  In addition there is the knuckle stun gun, the stun pen, cell phone stun gun, flashlight stungun, and lipstick stun gun.

Stun guns use high voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker for several minutes. The stun gun does not rely on pain for results. The energy stored in the gun is dumped into the attacker’s muscles causing them to do a great deal of work rapidly. This rapid work cycle instantly depletes the attacker’s blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid. In short, he is unable to produce energy for his muscles, and his body is unable to function properly. The stun gun also interrupts the tiny neurological impulses that control and direct voluntary muscle movement. When the attacker’s neuromuscular system is overwhelmed and controlled by the stun gun he loses his balance. Should the attacker be touching you, the current will NOT pass to your body!

Stun guns have increased in popularity because of the durability and versatility.  Many of these units come with a lifetime warranty, have rechargeable batteries, and are built to last.  The most popular brands are Stun Master and Z-Force.  Prices start under $20.  Visit www.defenduplus.com to find out more information and to shop for these products.
